“I Stood Upon a High Place”
I stood upon a high place,
And saw, below, many devils
Running, leaping,
and carousing in sin.
One looked up, grinning,
And said, “Comrade! Brother!”

This was provoked by a Tweet a friend reposted on his Facebook Timeline:
Reminder to Woke Folk: You will continue to mess up due to pretentious and self-righteous ideologies that cause you to think yourselves entitled to correct others not privileged (in woke subculture) by a special status (however oppressed historically and in the present day). So, take off your unearned merit badge that you think entitles you to be on the prowl to call out the supposed micro-aggressions of others without ever turning such critical scrutiny on yourself.
If you, “transmasc thot,” had substituted “we” for “you,” your post might not have broadcast this sort of “woke” arrogance and ignorance. Your naïve assumption is that a non-white person need never worry or work continually to check their racism and prejudices. Any statement beginning with “black people,” “white people,” “men,” “women,” “straight people,” or “gay people,” as in the “white people:” of this post, is stereotyped, ignorant, and wrong. The obvious reason is that any group of people is wildly divergent and varied.
Let’s take me, for example, as an older white guy.
I am not descended from slave masters, nor were my ancestors here during that era. My grandparents barely escaped anti-Semitic pogroms in Eastern Europe. My dad was a leading figure in the socialist DeLeonist party, and both parents were active in the civil rights movement. When New York public school teachers, like my dad, went on strike in the late Sixties, it was a bit of a shock when we found black folk ( who were protesting the strike for bogus reasons) were passing out copies of the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” the notorious anti-Semitic forgery created by the Czar’s secret police, the very document that had been used to incite the violent pogroms my grandparents had to escape. It was part of the growing phenomenon of black anti-semitism and reverse racism.
I grew up in a very multi-racial Bronx where I had the opportunity to get beaten up by children of all races, creeds, and colors. When I was twelve, my parents, who believed in public education (where they both worked and later so did both of their children), allowed me to be sent to a Junior High in the South Bronx to further integration. For two brutal years that have resulted in lifelong PTSD symptoms, I was subject to daily violent abuse, mostly by black kids who tormented me for being one of the few white kids in the school. Then it got worse. I was specifically targeted by a group of black Nation of Islam kids who all had “X” in their name, as in Malcolm X.
Malcolm X was told by his leader, Elijah Muhammad, that whites were “blue-eyed devils.” Unlike so many of the present Woke Folk, Malcolm decided to educate himself outside of his rigid box of conditioned beliefs. This caused him to diverge from the Nation of Islam ideology and ultimately led to his assassination. Malcolm went to Mecca to see the source of Islamic culture for himself. He discovered that there were blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims because Islam (though “woke” people call those who critique Islam “racists”) is not a race but a religion. He was also shocked to find that children belonging to the extended Saudi royal family were often accompanied by black slaves carrying their school books.
Historical fact Woke Folk don’t know: Muslims have owned and sold far more slaves than Caucasian Christian folk, and they are the primary group trafficking slaves today (and in all-time record numbers). For example, by 750 AD, “ Islam’s African empire cover (ed) roughly six million square kilometers, and the multi-continental Muslim trade in African slaves would uproot over 112 million blacks from their homes, would kill 84 million of them, and would put over 28 million blacks on sale in slave markets from one end of the empire of Islam to the other. This outdid the Western slave trade’s appalling 11 million black Africans displaced and a million killed by a staggering multiple of more than ten to one.”

When Malcolm X’s education made him no longer woke enough for rivals in the Nation of Islam, they assassinated him. Malcom’s widow and many others believe the current leader of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan, was responsible. https://www.nytimes.com/1994/03/13/nyregion/widow-of-malcolm-x-suspects-farrakhan-had-role-in-killing.html
Nevertheless, the reverse racist kids I went to school with and many others blamed Malcolm’s assassination on white folk like me who had nothing to do with it.
This is too un-PC ever to have been publicly talked about, but for a few years, including when I went to junior high in the South Bronx, the date of Malcolm’s assassination became an informal public school holiday known as “Kill Whitey Day.” On that date, New York City public schools were closed based on a bland statement that “disturbances were expected.” Just now, I finally found a public reference to kill whitey day from someone else who was in the Bronx public schools of that era: https://mrbellersneighborhood.com/2008/04/kill-whitey-day
And no, this wasn’t a day when white kids would be subject to linguistic microaggressions if they showed their faces in the wrong hoods. A girl I knew who had been out sick for a couple of weeks, and didn’t know it was Kill Whitey Day, was pulled out of the public bus she had taken to school and was beaten and gang-raped.
I barely escaped the viciously racist and anti-Semitic black Nation-of-Islam kids with my life. I was thrown down steel staircases multiple times. One of them threw an M-80 at my face—I ducked, but the explosion permanently affected my hearing. I experienced a couple of weeks of tinnitus after that M-80 exploded near my head, and though I can’t prove a causal link, for the last ten years or so, I have experienced tinnutis 24/7.
Question to those who like to throw around the word “Islamaphobia.” According to the Oxford English Dictionary:
phobia ‘fəʊbɪə► noun an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something: she suffered from a phobia about birds.
Phobia is about irrational fear, and therefore, it should not be applied to a rational fear of that which is objectively dangerous. If you are trying to escape a rampage shooter, no one will accuse you of bulletphobia. Was I being Islamaphobic when I ducked the M-80? Perhaps I deprived that black Nation of Islam of a culturally authentic experience of mutilating an infidel Jew? Was Salman Rushdie Islamaphobic when, in 2022, he tried to get away from an Islamic attacker who stabbed him multiple times, causing him to lose sight in one eye and the use of one hand?
As a Jew who was physically attacked by Muslims for two years as a child, am I being Islamaphobic to be wary of a religion that includes the following sacred Hadith:
“Judgement Day will not come until the Muslims fight the Jews. The Jews will hide behind the stones and the trees, and the stones and the trees will say, oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew hiding behind me — come and kill him.”
Known as the Hadith of the Stones and the Trees, this is a quintessential eschatological hadith that is recognized as “authentic” (i.e., is confidently ascribed to the Prophet Muhammad) by the most authoritative sources of Prophetic traditions.[9] Dating back to early Islam, this hadith is still prominent in the consciousness of Muslims today, and is frequently mentioned in contemporary discourse, e.g., in sermons and in the media, and in school curricula, including in West Bank and Gaza schools.[10] As we have seen, Article 7 of Hamas’ Charter presents this hadith as relevant to the operative reality of its war.
A YouTube video promising that the end of the Jews is imminent shows a Jew hiding behind a tree, which says, “‘Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgNU2gwehqk
When my father made a complaint to Junior High 79, where I was being targeted for my race and religion by black Nation of Islam kids, the school became concerned with their liability because of how I was being treated, so an assistant principal walked me to the front door every day after my last class so that the beatings would occur off school property.
Several years later, I went back to the scene of my childhood torment and became an English teacher and the building security coordinator of an all-male public high school in the South Bronx (Samuel Gompers H.S. on 143rdStreet and Southern Boulevard) at the epicenter of blocks and blocks of burned-out apartment buildings. When President Jimmy Carter gave a speech on urban blight against the post-apocalyptic backdrop of burnt-up South Bronx hellscape, he was standing a block away from Gompers. This was in the 80s at the start of the crack epidemic. As dean and building security coordinator, I patrolled the hallways of that school to make sure other kids (nearly 100% black and Hispanic) weren’t bullied the way I was. Though I was a short white guy, I was respected and liked by inner-city kids because I didn’t listen to the sort of ignorant, perpetual-collective-guilt woke advice given in the social media post above. I wasn’t afraid to get in their face when that was necessary and didn’t feel apologetic because of the color of my skin. I also took many of those inner-city kids—some of whom had rarely been outside the South Bronx even to go to Manhattan, let alone outside the city—-on backpacking trips to Harriman State Park at my own expense. How many Woke Folk who want to lecture me about BLM have actually put their lives on the line to protect black and brown people? I did every workday for six years. And I mean that quite literally. After I left Gompers, metal detectors were installed at the front door, but we had no way of screening people for weapons while I was there. A student named Eric Blagrove went to Riker’s Island for attempted manslaughter. He tried to kill me with a machete. There were numerous violent incidents. Mostly, I kept hallways empty between classes and broke up fights.
While I was working at Gompers, I finally met someone who really knew what it was like to get violently bullied —not some woke-snowflake type subject to supposed micro-aggressions and various linguistic insensitivities, but someone else subject to macro-aggressions such as getting the shit kicked out of you for your race or religion. This was my late Palestinian brother-in-law Jamal, who grew up in Palestine, the West Bank, where he was also brutalized by Muslims (he was an Arab Christian Palestinian).
So, Woke Folk: Be careful when you self-righteously tell whole groups of other folk who they are and how they should behave—they might be more diverse and hard to categorize than you think.
PC/Woke culture has pathologized into an over-correction of valid past and present abuses of various groups. It has now become a set of blinders, a template that encourages shadow projection onto some groups while practicing shadow denial with other groups. Notice that stripped of the group names, this is exactly what white supremacists do.
But here’s a woke fact for your consideration—every individual and every group has a shadow. White folks have shadows, black folks have shadows, gender-fluid folks have shadows, you, me, and all of us have shadows. If you are always talking about a “they” and their shadow and are not examining your own, then you are dangerously asleep.
No one is “woke.” Being awake is a moment-by-moment struggle for degrees of wakefulness. When you hear anyone talking about “waking people up,” you are listening to a dangerous sleepwalker. Conspiracists like Alex Jones say things like, “Wake up, sheeple.” The unquestioned assumption of those calling others to “wake up” is that they are awake. Actually, they are more likely to be what Jung called “Those terrifying invalids who think they are on a mission to save the world.” Every group, every person has a shadow, and no one is more dangerously asleep than self-righteous folk calling out the shadows of other individuals and groups without scrutinizing their individual and group shadows.
So, Folk of Any Kind: As Goethe said, “If you want to clean up the whole world, begin with your own doorstep.” Or, as Jung once said, if you want to undo all the oppression and violence of history, “begin by reclaiming your own shadow from the world.”

Hey Woke Person—Are you a Zen Goddess or an Uptight Church Lady in Drag?
A follow-up: Two videos of John McWhorter, a black Columbia University linguist, talk about how anti-racism now functions as a religion. I found McWhorter’s analysis extremely interesting because, for decades, I’ve noticed a proliferation of secular fundamentalist religions. For example, I wrote a long paper in the 80s about how diets and eating disorders functioned essentially as obsessive religions. (A wonderful recent book, Diet Cults, expands this theme). Multi-level marketing schemes have a revival tent hysteria with a charismatic preacher, promises of salvation, etc.
People love to invent their own narcissistic religions. New Age women commonly refer to themselves as “goddesses” (e.g., an ad in this week’s Boulder Weekly for an acupuncture service has the headline: “BE A ZEN GODDESS”). While, of course, it would be heretical for men (even young male hotties with piercings and cool tattoos) to refer to themselves as “gods.” Woke subculture functions as a rigid and self-righteous fundamentalist religion where you will be instantly excommunicated for stating heretical facts or ideas.
Be Woke, it’s much easier than Thinking
I was having a pleasant conversation with a lesbian undergraduate who was majoring in gender studies when I included Islam among regressive patriarchal forces. With perfect, Woke, adamant, and self-righteous certainty, she stated flatly, “Islam is not regressive!” Whereupon she instantly shut down the conversation. Of course, from the point of view of belief conservation, she was right to do so, because given an opportunity to respond, I would have pointed out that the treatment of three quarters of a billion women under Islam is by far the greatest human rights disaster on the planet with nothing even a close second– a vast gender apartheid that exists not in one country but in many Islamic nations.

(Note, this non-profit no longer exists, but I (Jonathan Zap) worked with Sean for this non-profit for several years, and it’s main purpose, besides spreading awareness, was funding groups run by Muslim women to protect Muslim women such as RAWA (the Revolutionary Afghan Women’s Association) and especially The Progressive Women’s Association of Pakistan a safe house and burn center in Islamabad, Pakistan set up to help Muslim women who were victims of “stove burnings.”

Campus protesters in the USA chant, “We are Hammas” and some have been spotted wearing T-Shirts that read, “Queers for Hammas.” But do they really know the group they are celebrating? Here is a an article explaining the proper way women should be treated, according to an Hamas journalist:
MAINTAINING FAMILY HONOR
by Al Skudsi bin Hookah, roving reporter and foreign correspondent for The Gaza Gajeera.
Jan 20, 2003
I am very unhappy. Our way of life is under attack. And we are not fighting back. Deep down, we know that when a woman has disgraced her family, nothing will restore honor except by killing her. This is understood in Jordan, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. So why are we Arabs telling the Western press that honor killing is cultural, that it is not really part of Islam? Our way of life is based on maintaining our honor. And make no mistake about it: a woman does tarnish her family’s honor by engaging in pre-marital sex or by getting herself raped, when she seeks divorce, and when she marries against her family’s wishes.
Why are we pussyfooting? Are we ashamed of what we do? Why are some of us trying to play it down? Like the people who say it’s the same as battering women in America. Come on, now. Sometimes, when we correct a wife’s behavior by a well-deserved beating, we can maybe go a little too far. But that’s different. Or there’s this guy, Mohammed Haz Yahya at the Hebrew University (wouldn’t you know it), who makes believe killing to protect our honor is like the western world’s crime of passion. Come on now.
It’s not just religious leaders who know it’s the right thing to do. Many of the most progressive political leaders are the ones who defend the practice. To maintain the integrity of our society and our traditions, we must maintain our honor by any and every means. And keeping our women pure is a big part of our honor. So there’s no point saying honor killing isn’t really part of our religion. Our religion isn’t just what’s in the Koran. Honor killings fit into the cultural context of today’s Islamic teachings. Honor and Islam are inextricably bound; they are what give our life meaning. A strong religion demands we choose to maintain our honor.
I am also annoyed that news reports focus on gory details instead of showing understanding of what motivated the men who act vigorously to maintain honor. They are the real victims. Their honor was violated, so killing the offending woman is self-defense. Instead, like in this story, reporters graphically describe the damage done by the ax – of course an ax is going to do damage. Listen to this: ” Two months ago, when she tried to run away yet again, Kina grabbed a kitchen knife and an ax and stabbed and beat the girl [his daughter] until she lay dead in the blood-smeared bathroom of the family’s Istanbul apartment. He then commanded one of his daughters-in-law to clean up the mess. When his two sons came home from work 14 hours later, he ordered them to dispose of the 5-foot-3 corpse, which had been wrapped in a carpet and a blanket. The girl’s head had been so mutilated, police said, it was held together by a knotted cloth.”
And this:
“Kifaya Husayn, a 16-year-old Jordanian girl, was lashed to a chair by her 32-year-old brother. He gave her a drink of water and told her to recite an Islamic prayer. Then he slashed her throat. Immediately afterward, he ran out into the street, waving the bloody knife and crying, ‘I have killed my sister to cleanse my honor.’ Kifaya’s crime? She was raped by another brother, a 21-year-old man. Her judge and jury? Her own uncles, who convinced her eldest brother that Kifaya was too much of a disgrace to the family’s honor to be allowed to live. The murderer was sentenced to fifteen years, but the sentence was subsequently reduced to seven and a half years, an extremely severe penalty by Jordanian standards.”
This one is better. At least the reporter focused on why the brother had to kill his sister.
A 25-year-old Palestinian who hanged his sister with a rope: “I did not kill her, but rather helped her to commit suicide and to carry out the death penalty she sentenced herself to. I did it to wash with her blood the family honor that was violated because of her and in response to the will of society that would not have had any mercy on me if I didn’t . . . Society taught us from childhood that blood is the only solution to wash the honor.”
And here, at least, we can see it isn’t just some ignorant slobs who live in the boonies.
“`I would do what I have to do,’ said Bassam al-Hadid, a Jordanian with an American doctorate who spent 12 years as a hospital administrator in the United States, when asked whether he would kill a daughter who had sex outside marriage.”
“Samia Sarwar, 29, mother of two boys aged 4 and 8, was shot dead today in lawyer Hina Jillani’s office by a bearded man accompanying her mother and uncle. `He’s my helper, I can’t walk,’ said the mother, when Hina told the two men to get out. As the mother went to sit down in front of Hina’s desk, and Saima stood up from her chair, the bearded man whipped out a pistol from his waistcoat and shot Saima in the head, killing her instantly.”
Her impure state can destabilize morality in our whole society. If you don’t understand that, you won’t understand that our honor demands that we must tolerate no impertinence. Everyone must know his place. Men must be in control of their families. Women and children must obey. Women must devote themselves to the care of their husband and children. Or things will spiral out of control.
Islam enslaved ten times more Africans than white Europeans. According to the Hadiths and Muhammad’s Sacred Biography, the prophet personally, and with avid enthusiasm, beheaded several hundred surrendered Jewish men, women, and children, and this “religion of peace” has always been a world conquest ideology which 70 years after the prophet’s death had conquered a land mass 7 times the size of the USA and 3X the size of the Roman Empire at its peak, etc. But Woke fundamentalists cannot hear or be told such historical facts because they will brand you an Islamaphobic racist (though, once again, Islam is a religion, not a race).
So, at this point, though, they may have dreadlocks and tattoos, etc. I have come to see that a great many young Woke folk are actually a bunch of uptight, rigid, righteous church ladies in drag with crosses burning in their eyes.
