Teilhard de Chardin, in The Phenomenon of Man, wrote: There can be no doubt of it: the great human machine is designed to work and must work--by producing a super-abundance of mind. If it does not work, or rather if it produces only matter, this means that it has gone into reverse." Fortunately, we are not going in reverse, we are moving from matter to mind.For example, during the 90s as the value of the industrial output of the USA doubled, its physical weight halved. We were producing more pixels and less pig iron, more intellectual property in the form of zeros and ones. We must amplify this trend and that's why the use of crude fossil fuels seems so offensively stupid. We need to use our minds to gather the vast energies---solar, fission, zero point---that are closer to mind than to crude matter to keep our civilization from slipping into reverse.
