Queen Elizabeth, during a cringeworthy visit to a Jaguar factory in 1956, told workers,
“Many of you are living uneventful, lonely lives.” This unintentional insult is heightened by her flat, disinterested delivery. She continues, “Perhaps you don’t understand that on your steadfastness and ability to withstand the fatigue of dull, repetitive work depends in great measure the happiness and prosperity of the community as a whole.”
Avoid meaningless work if possible. Jobs take up too much of your time and life energy to have no intrinsic value besides being a means to a paycheck. Sometimes, you may have to accept such a devil’s bargain to survive, but if at all possible, find a meaningful livelihood. Meaning can, however, be found in humble occupations where you are doing something of benefit to the community, are meeting people, or are doing purely physical work that leaves your mind free or allows you to listen to audio books, podcasts, etc. Avoid unworthy work that you won’t remember well on your deathbed.
